The existing suspension bridge crossing the South Fork Holston River was designed, developed and conceived as part of the 1976 Bicentennial celebration centering on the historic 'Kings Port' Riverfront corridor near the historic Netherland Inn, and the sacred Cherokee lands known as the "Long Island of the Holston". The suspension bridge spans some 350' across the South Fork Holston River landing adjacent to the monument of the Clans of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee which commemorates a corner stone of the lands that were returned to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians on July 16, 1976, thereby connecting two very distinct, but vitally important, landmark properties and histories that contributed to the establishment of what we know as Kingsport, Tennessee.
